We got to hear a little bit about their time in India. The members were starting to file out one by one. At this point, we decided it was time to leave. We were walked to the door, so we could put our shoes on before we left. Once we stepped outside, we were greeted by the wet October weather. Goodbyes were told, and Ms. Ludy made sure we knew their door is always opened for us. The next service I attended was not much different than the first. I visited the Quan Am Monastery on the 26th of October. It was six oclock on a Friday evening. As I am driving down the road trying to find my destination I see it. This place was something you could not miss. It was beautiful. The monastery itself was huge. In front of the monastery was a torana. According to our book, a torana is an arched entrance seen in many Buddhist buildings. Under the torana was a burnt orange gate and on each side of the torana was a foo dog statue. I did not have as much time to ask as many questions as I wanted, so I did not get to ask about the statues. However, upon further research foo dog statues are meant for guardianship. When placed inside or outside of any building, they will protect that building from anything negative (Tchi, 2018). The monastery and torana had a sandy color with rustic orange roof tops. The front had mini potted trees. When you walk up the steps in the front of t he monastery there are shrines to the right and to the left. There are no doors that lead to the shrines. There is just an opened archway. I later found out that these shrines served to honor monks who had passed away. On the side of the monastery, as I was going around back, I came upon huge statues. One statue was of a standing Buddha. Around the back of the monastery I noticed there were people carrying heads of lettuce and other vegetables. Once I got closer I realized they have their own garden. I later find out why. My guide was a girl who was not much older than me. Her name was Katie, and she was very helpful in showing me what to do and explaining what they were doing and why they were doing it. The inside of the monastery was very ornate. Which was different from Pema Karpo. I believe the lack of funding has a lot to do with this. There were many statues of Buddha with plants placed throughout the building. Before entering the room in which we would be participating in meditation and Dharma Talk, I again was asked to take off my shoes. At Quan Am Monastery they also believe taking your shoes off symbolizes respect. Unlike Pema Karpo, the room was bigger. The floors were beige tile instead of carpet. The walls were a light gold with three windows on each side. The windows had gold curtains hung over them, but they were parted as to let the sunlight shine through. Quan Am did not have the cushions already placed on the floor. Upon entering, we were asked to grab a cushion and join the rest of the members. There was not a real reason for this; it was just a preference of the Monastery. The congregation was not as diverse in ethnicity as Pema Karpo; however, Quan Am was more diverse with age groups. It ranged from teenagers to middle aged adults. Although, the youth did make up most the people. There were only nine members, including me and Miko, at Pema Karpo, but there were about twenty members at Quan Am. Upon talking to Katie, I discover that Quan Am is a Mahayana Buddhist Monastery, which is the largest sector of Buddhism. Ven. Thich Nguyen Tanh is a monk of the monastery that leads the services. Ven the Western abbreviation for the title Venerable which is given to ordained monks and nuns (Tan, 2012). Instead of sitting in front on us, like Candia did, Ven. Tanh sat off to the side, facing the wall to our right. At the beginning of the service, we started by reading from sutras and various other Buddha teachings. It was very easy to follow along because everything was written and spoken in English. Each member had a chant book and a stand where we placed our b ooks. The stands main purpose was so the books did not touch the ground. The stand also made it easier for everyone to relax, because they arent focused on constantly holding their book. The Eight Realizations Sutra was a sutra that we spoke. The realization that connected the most with the Dharma Talk of that evening was the First Realization. The First Realization spoke about how Earth is impermanent and so is everything else. Following the readings was a time for meditation. At Pema Karpo, we meditated for five minutes, but at Quan Am we meditated for fifteen minutes. The way in which we meditated was the same. Ven. Tanh struck a gong with a striker which signaled the start of the meditation. Before I closed my eyes to meditate, I scanned the room to record how the members were meditating. I found that it was the same at Pema Karpo. Everyone was cross legged and had great posture. All eyes were closed, and everyone was still. After the fifteen minutes, Ven. Tanh struck the gong a gain. Now, was time for the Dharma Talk given by Ven. Tanh. That Friday nights talk was about impermanence. Ven. Tanh taught that impermanence applies to earth and every living and nonliving thing, idea, and place on Earth. He related us to the seasons. He explained the seasons are always changing. Every minute the weather is changing, and each year the season are never the same. One year the summer may be brutal and the next it is not so bad. He even related it to one season alone. Every three months there is a new season. Everything is always changing, even us. After the service everyone stayed and talked to one another. They even invited me to stay and enjoy a vegan snack. We all enjoyed the lasagna, stuffed with vegan cheese, and banana bread that was available to everyone. While eating the snack provided they explained to me that they do not believe in harming animals. Once they told me I remembered learning about this in class. The food was delicious. After we got done eating, I asked Ven. Tanh questions about the statues I noticed that were decorating the interior. They were all statues of Buddha; however, I noticed that they were not all the same, and this intrigued me. He told me that there are many different statues of Buddha, and they all symbolize something different (depending on how he is situated). The statue that shows Buddha with his legs crossed, eyes closed, and hands in lap is known as the calming Buddha. This statue was in the room where we did meditation. This statue symbolizes serenity, and it is known to have a calming effect on people. After hearing what this Buddha symbolized, I understood why it was placed in the meditation room. Another statue showed Buddha holding up his hand in an okay sign. Ven. Than told me this represents The Wheel of the Dharma. It represents teaching. Lastly, and my favorite statue, is the Laughing Buddha. This statue depicts Buddha as happy and it symbolizes luck and prosperity. After learning about the statues, I knew it was time for me to leave. I did not want to leave the people at the service because they created an environment of peace and welcoming. They were all friendly people. Before I left, I received many hugs and thoughts of wanting me to prosper in school. The Pemo Karpo Meditation Center and the Quan Am Monastery gave me a wonderful experience. Both groups believe the same in impermanence. Both leaders went into great explanations of what impermanence means and how we can find it all around us. Everybody believed in peace and the way to find that is to let go of our desires and selfish tendencies. The Meditation Center focused more on meditation; whereas, the Monastery spent a lot of time on sutras and Dharma talks. They focused and teaching Buddhas teachings. The members were the same in both services. Everyone was kind and welcoming. I enjoyed my time at both services and learned a lot about the religion. Meditation was my favorite thing to experience. I found that it does help the soul and eases your mind. If the opportunity ever arises, I would go back and pay everyone a visit. I learned that there are two views of Buddhism: peace and kindness, and I will take these with me wherever I go.

Known for: documentary photographs of 20th century history, especially the Great Depression and her image of a Migrant Mother Dates: May 26, 1895 - October 11, 1965Occupation: photographerAlso known as: Dorothea Nutzhorn Lange, Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn More About Dorothea Lange Dorothea Lange, born in Hoboken, New Jersey as Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn, contracted polio at seven and the damage was such that she limped for the rest of her life. When Dorothea Lange was twelve, her father deserted the family, perhaps fleeing charges of embezzlement. Dorotheas mother first went to work as a librarian in New York City, taking Dorothea with her so that she could attend public school in Manhattan. Her mother later became a social worker. After graduating from high school, Dorothea Lange began to study to become a teacher, enrolling in a teacher training program. She decided instead to become a photographer, dropped out of school, and studied by working with Arnold Genthe and then Charles H. Davis. She later took a photography class at Columbia with Clarence H. White. Beginning Work Dorothea Lange and a friend, Florence Bates, traveled around the world supporting themselves with photography. Lange settled in San Francisco because they were robbed there in 1918 and she needed to take a job. She began her own portrait studio in San Francisco by 1919, which soon became popular with civic leaders and the wealthy of the city. The next year she married an artist, Maynard Dixon. She continued her photography studio, but also spent time promoting her husbands career and caring for the couples two sons. The Depression The Depression ended her photography business. In 1931 she sent her sons to boarding school and lived separately from her husband, giving up their home while they each lived in their respective studios. She began photographing the effects of the Depression on people. She exhibited her photographs with the help of Willard Van Dyke and Roger Sturtevant. Her 1933 White Angel Breadline is one of the most famous of her photographs from this period. Langes photographs were also used to illustrate the sociology and economics work for University of Californias Paul S. Taylor. He used her work to back up grant requests for food and camps for the many Depression and Dust Bowl refugees coming to California. In 1935, Lange divorced Maynard Dixon and married Taylor. In 1935, Lange was hired as one of the photographers working for the Resettlement Administration, which became the Farm Security Administration or RSA. In 1936, as part of the work of this agency, Lange took the photograph known as Migrant Mother. In 1937, she returned to the Farm Security Administration. In 1939, Taylor and Lange published An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion. World War II The FSA in 1942 became part of the Office of War Information. From 1941 to 1943, Dorothea Lange was a photographer for the War Location Authority, where she took photographs of interned Japanese Americans. These photos were not published until 1972; another 800 of them were released by the National Archives in 2006 after a 50-year embargo. She returned to the Office of War Information from 1943 to 1945, and her work there was sometimes published without credit. Later Years In 1945, she began working for Life magazine. Her features included the 1954 Three Mormon Towns and the 1955 The Irish Country People. Plagued by illness from about 1940, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1964. Dorothea Lange succumbed to the cancer in 1965. Her last published photo essay was The American Country Woman. A retrospective of her work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1966. Throughout human history, various minority groups find themselves the targets of prejudice, discrimination, and even violent acts of hatred. One of the most notable ways in which the struggles of these groups are documented and exemplified is through literature. Sexual orientation, and more specifically homosexuality, is a prominent point of controversy within the world of fiction writing, as well as through the nonfictional history of various societies. Sarah Waters’ Affinity is a prime example of how history and fiction can intertwine. Waters wrote this novel in the 1990’s, but set it in London during the Victorian Era. In order to create a realistic narrative, Waters had to ensure that it was historically accurate, even down to the societal impact of Margaret’s sexual preferences. Though it was not overtly discussed, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries marked the era in which â€Å"†¦homosexuality in its modern form truly began to emerge†(Wille tt 351). From the start of Affinity, Margaret’s emotional and psychological flaws are exposed through her diary. She also reveals details about her relationship with Helen, which ultimately foreshadows the outcome of her future romantic relationships. Many of Margaret’s hardships come from the pressures that her society puts on her and, in turn, she develops unhealthy relationships with those around her. When we think of the tragedy, we think of something bad happening to someone. This cannot be a tragedy. To know what tragedy is we have to take a look at what Arthur Miller thinks of as tragic. In his essay Tragedy and the Common Man, Arthur Miller says, â€Å"As a general rule, to which there may be exceptions unknown to me, I think the tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure one thing – his sense of personal dignity: From Orestes to Hamlet, Medea to Macbeth, the underlying struggle in that of the individual attempting to gain his â€Å"rightful† position in his society.† I agree and disagree with Miller’s first statement. Review of Timeline by Michael Crichton The purpose of history is to explain the presentto say why the world around us is the way it is. History tells us what is important in our world, and how it came to be. Michael Crichton, Timeline Ill admit it right up front: I dont like historical fiction much. When authors are sloppy in their research, I find the inaccuracies distracting enough to ruin what might otherwise be a good story. But even when the representation of the past is largely authentic (and to be fair, there are some extraordinary authors who really know their stuff), fictionalization makes history much less enjoyable for me. What can I say? Im a hopeless history buff. Every minute I spend reading fiction is a minute Id rather spend learning historical fact. Heres another confession: Im not a big fan of Michael Crichton. I do find good science fiction fascinating (a genre that pushes the edges of what if is as mind-expanding for me as a scholarly discipline that asks what really happened). And Crichton isnt a bad writer, but none of his works has ever made me sit up and say, Wow! While his ideas can be intriguing, they all seem to make much better movies. Whether this is because his style lacks the immediacy of film or because I have to spend less time plowing my way through the story I have yet to decide. So, as you can well imagine, I was predisposed to despise Crichtons semi-historical novel Timeline. The Up Side of  Timeline Surprise! I liked it. The premise was appealing, the action was gripping, and the ending was dramatically satisfying. Some of the cliffhangers and segues were very nicely executed. While there wasnt a single character I could identify with or even like very much, I was pleased to see some character development as a result of the adventure.  The good guys grew more likable; the bad guys were really bad. Best of all, the medieval setting was mostly accurate, and well-realized to boot. This alone makes the book a worthwhile read, especially for those who are unfamiliar or only somewhat familiar with the Middle Ages. (Unfortunately, this is a rather large percentage of the population.) Crichton effectively points up some common misconceptions about medieval life, presenting the reader with a vivid picture that is at times much more attractive, and at other times much more frightening and repellent, than that generally presented to us in popular fiction and film. Of course there were errors; I cant imagine an error-free historical novel. (Fourteenth-century people larger than modern folk? Not likely, and we know this from the skeletal remains, not surviving armor.) But for the most part, Crichton really managed to bring the Middle Ages alive. The Down Side of  Timeline I did have some problems with the book. Crichtons usual technique of expanding the cutting-edge technology of today into a believable science-fiction premise fell sadly short. He spent too much effort trying to convince the reader that time travel could be possible, then used a theory that struck me as internally inconsistent. Though there may be an explanation for this apparent flaw, it was never addressed clearly in the book. I suggest you avoid a close examination of the technology and accept it as a given in order to enjoy the story more. Furthermore, the characters who were surprised by the realities of the past were people who should have known better. The general public may think the Middle Ages were uniformly filthy and dull; but encountering examples of good hygiene, splendid interior decor or swift swordplay shouldnt surprise a medievalist. This makes the characters not very good at their jobs or, worse, it presents the erroneous impression that historians dont bother with the details of material culture. As an amateur medievalist, I find this rather annoying. Im sure professional historians would be downright insulted. Still, these are aspects of the book that are easy to overlook once the action is truly underway. So get ready for an exciting ride into history. Update Since this review was written in March of 2000, Timeline was made into a feature-length, theatrical-release movie, directed by Richard Donner and starring Paul Walker, Frances OConnor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly and David Thewlis. It is now available on DVD. Ive seen it, and its fun, but it hasnt broken into my list of Top 10 Fun Medieval Films.
